grand national golf club
Grand National Golf Course was built in the 1990’s during the boom of golf development. The course was then purchased by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe in 2006. In 2010, Herfort Norby was hired to complete the preparation of a longrange master plan for improvements intended to improve course conditioning and maximize revenue. The study included preparation of concept plans, cost estimates and the presentation of multiple phasing options to the Mille Lacs Band Tribal Council. Proposed recommendations included the redesign of select holes to improve playability and course conditioning as needed to reposition the course as a moderately-priced up-scale destination course capable of attracting visitors from outside the current primary market area.
The first phase of improvements completed in October of 2010 included the redesign of two holes intended to eliminate forced carries and to make the course more enjoyable for the average golfer. Phase two including the construction of two new golf holes began in July of 2011 and opened for play in July of 2012. Phase three, including the regrassng of fairways and the reconstruction of bunkers, is scheduled to begin in fall of 2013.
