THE PRESERVE GOLF CLUB

New Golf Course Construction

GENERAL INFORMATION
In the late 1990’s, the Iowa DNR proposed creating a system of “destination state parks” which included a wider variety of accommodationsand recreational activities for park users. In 2006, Herfort Norby was hired to design and oversee construction of the new golf course. The Preserve on Rathbun Lake won runner-up Best New Public Course of 2009 from Golf Inc. and Top 10 Best New Public Course of 2009 by both Golf Digest and LINKS magazine.

PROJECT PROFILE
Herfort Norby’s responsibilities included the design and management of all aspects of the golf course including preliminary design concepts, construction documents, bidding and construction observation. Through the use of detailed plans, competitive bidding and a lengthy list of bid alternates, the original contract award came in nearly $500,000 under budget. The project included construction of 19 new bentgrass greens, PennLinks II bentgrass fairways, a 320 yard driving range, concrete cart paths, 24 acres of native prairie restoration areas and a new state-of-the-art irrigation system. Construction began in January of 2007 and was completed in November of the same year. The course opened for play in April of 2009.
